A little cot, a big milestone

For a baby born three months prematurely, every milestone matters. After beginning life in a life-saving incubator, moving into an open cot is a significant step towards recovery and, eventually, going home.

For little Z and his mum, this transition has been made easier thanks to four specialist cots funded by MedEquip4Kids for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Burnley General Hospital.

Supporting precious moments together

When a baby is born prematurely, parents can face a difficult start to family life. With their little one receiving specialist medical care, even everyday activities such as feeding, changing and settling their baby can feel unfamiliar or difficult.

Moving into an open cot gives parents greater access to their baby and more opportunities to take an active role in their care.

Z’s mum explained the difference this has made:

“The open cot allows me to be more independent and involved in my baby’s care, without the restrictions of an incubator.”

This greater independence can help parents build confidence in caring for their baby, strengthening their bond and preparing them for the transition home.

Making every milestone count

The specialist cots are used daily by the NICU team and will benefit around 100 babies each year. As well as providing greater comfort and accessibility, they help reduce pain and distress for babies and support parents’ emotional wellbeing during what can be an overwhelming time.

NICU nurse Frances Pickering has described the cots as a welcome addition to the unit, highlighting how they make access easier for both parents and staff while supporting family involvement in care.

For babies like Z, these changes can make a meaningful difference to their hospital experience. And for their families, being able to take a more active role in their little one’s care can bring reassurance, confidence and precious opportunities to bond.

MedEquip4Kids is proud to have funded these specialist cots for East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. By providing equipment that supports both babies and their families, we are helping make the journey from intensive care towards home a little easier.
