New play therapy resources are helping children supported by Community CAMHS South, part of Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, find creative ways to explore difficult feelings.

The team works with children and young people experiencing a range of mental health difficulties, including anxiety and the effects of trauma. Thanks to the new resources, the play therapy room now has more toys, books and equipment to help children express themselves through play.

A world of imagination

One 11-year-old boy used the new tent and forest backdrop to become a jungle explorer. Through role play, he explored worries about being away from his family and imagined what he might be able to experience in the future.

Another child used the tent and lighting to create a safe, calming space and practise ways to manage anxiety.

The children have been quick to show their enthusiasm. One described the forest backdrop as a path leading somewhere “magical”.

Making space for play

Play can give children another way to explore feelings and experiences that may be difficult to put into words. The new resources are already being used to support conversations about anxiety, loss and bereavement.

We’re delighted that these resources are helping clinicians create a welcoming space where children can use their imagination, explore difficult feelings and discover what helps them feel safe.

Thank you to the Helen Jean Cope Charity and Jessie Spencer Trust for making this project possible.

“During winter months our admissions of children with respiratory conditions increase, so these saturation monitors are vital to us being able to safely monitor children. They will allow us to monitor more children both continuously through their stay with us and at intermittent times during their visit. Staff will find the additional units make their jobs easier.”
