Children’s Outpatients at Burnley General Hospital treats around 30,000 babies, children and young people per year. The department has recently been refurbished to make it a more child friendly environment but budget constraints did not allow for toys and activity equipment to complete the upgrade. The staff have now asked MedEquip4Kids to provide the items required which includes toddler walkers, baby dolls, puzzles and an activity panel. A treatment chair and some small medical devises are also needed.

Young patients are often distressed and confused by clinical settings and may feel anxious before medical procedures, so it’s important to offer age-appropriate resources to distract and entertain them while they wait to be seen. It’s easier for medical staff to treat children if they arrive in a more relaxed state of mind and it can prevent them from developing fears around future hospital appointments.

This equipment will help to calm and soothe children during their time in the Outpatients department and will greatly enhance their hospital experience.

This distracts them from their treatment and helps to cheer them up. […]

“This donation has enabled us to use more varied and useful therapeutic toys and games when working with children and young people with mental health difficulties, as well as using extra clinic rooms which are now more child-friendly. This has helped reduced anxiety about coming to CAMHS and meant that family therapy can be done. Both parents of a 10 year old boy can now attend with their 5 year old as the youngest child can play with our new resources in the waiting room or clinic space. The 10 year old benefited from therapeutic games about thoughts/feelings and we were also able to observe imaginative play for assessment.”
