Baby Theo was just 4 days old when he was admitted to Royal Oldham Children’s Unit with jaundice. Upon arrival, he was placed immediately in their new Babyleo incubator.

This specialist incubator, funded by our incredible donors, is designed to support babies and their families through treatments like phototherapy. It provides a warm, stable and quiet environment for newborns to recover, alongside real-time monitoring that keep parents informed and engaged with their baby’s care.

For his mum, Rachel, it was an overwhelming and anxiety-ridden time, seeing her newborn under bright lights, surrounded by unfamiliar equipment. But the incubator helped to ease some of that anxiety.

“It was a warm, quiet environment that made my baby look comfortable. I felt more connected and less helpless as a parent.”

Not only is the Babyleo vital for families, but it also allows staff to carry out observations and treatment without disrupting babies during a critical stage. This means that babies like little Theo get all the important rest they need.

This is exactly why we fund equipment like this—to improve both care and experience from the very start. Thank you to Zochonis Charitable Trust for helping to fund this equipment, and to our donors for making care like this possible.

“Infections of the central nervous system need urgent and appropriate treatment. Most laboratory methods can take from 24 to 48 hours for diagnosis of bacterial meningitis and three to seven days for diagnosis of viral meningitis or encephalitis. The new equipment will mean we can get results of these tests in around an hour. We’ll be able to inform the clinicians of a positive result, allowing targeted therapy and reassurance to the patients and families. Just as important is the reporting of negative results, which may enable treatment withdrawal and possibly a shorter hospital stay.”
