The Christie in Manchester treats young children, teenagers and young adults for a variety of cancers. The cancers are treated in different ways including Proton Beam Therapy, Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy and surgery according to the area concerned and stage of the illness. Regular and prolonged visits add an element of boredom to the worry and pain experienced during treatments and recovery. Distraction therapy and activities can help to make the time pass more pleasantly.
The Christie have applied for our support to fund The Box which is a collection of puzzles, challenges and games. The Box is designed to build bridges between people and create a space where they can connect and come together. Great screen free entertainment for children and their friends and family during treatment. Trials of The Box at The Christie produced very positive responses include ‘very engaging, accessible and fun’, ‘really helps the hours fly by when having Chemotherapy in hospital’. The funded project will also provide recyclable puzzle postcards and benefit over 600 young patients.
