When the doors to St Nicholas Special School’s new soft play room opened, the response from pupils was immediate.
There were wide eyes, huge smiles and excited cries of “WOW!” as children explored a space created just for them.
For many of the pupils like Annabelle, Otto and Primrose, opportunities like this are difficult to access outside school. Busy public soft play centres can be overwhelming for children with sensory needs, while cost can also be a barrier for families. Having a dedicated soft play room within school means children can experience the freedom, excitement and developmental benefits of play in an environment where they feel safe.
The room has quickly become much more than somewhere to have fun.
Children who previously struggled to manage their emotions or found transitions difficult are becoming more settled and engaged. After spending time in the room, many return to class calmer, more focused and ready to learn.
Every day, staff see moments of progress that might otherwise go unnoticed: a child trying something new, taking turns with a friend, proudly calling “look at me!”, or simply feeling relaxed enough to smile and enjoy themselves.
Children who can share their thoughts describe the room as “the best” and “amazing”. For those who communicate differently, their enjoyment is clear through their laughter, smiles and eagerness to return.
Around 200 children have already benefited from the new facility, and many more will continue to enjoy it for years to come.
