For children with complex physical and sensory disabilities, finding a sense of calm and engagement (especially in the middle of a busy school day) can be a struggle. At Acorns Primary School in Preston, a new piece of equipment is changing all that.
Thanks to generous donations from The Kirkby Foundation and Cash for Kids, we were proud to fund a Sensory Musical Waterbed for Acorns’ dedicated sensory room. Installed in March 2026, it has been in daily use ever since — bringing joy, calm and new possibilities to all 94 pupils at the school.
What Does the Waterbed Do?
The waterbed sits at the heart of Acorns’ sensory room, providing a warm, fully supportive space where children can relax, move and engage with their surroundings. Its gentle warmth helps ease muscle tension and discomfort, while built-in musical resonance allows children to feel sound as physical vibration — a uniquely powerful sensory experience for pupils who may have limited ways of engaging with the world around them. For many children, time on the waterbed also helps them regulate their emotions and engage more fully in the rest of the school day.
Real Differences, Real Children
The impact has been immediate and moving. Hughie, aged 6, arrived at the school unable to truly acknowledge or connect with those around him due to him limited sensory development. After regular sessions in the sensory room, he can now make and hold eye contact with teachers and fellow pupils — a milestone his family and teachers are thrilled with.
For Korede, aged 7, whose physical disability makes independent sitting and sensory access a significant challenge, the waterbed has offered something remarkable: freedom. Fully supported by the water, he can move comfortably and freely, with the warmth and vibrations reducing the dystonic movements that usually limit him. During sessions, he has been relaxed and joyful — feelings which are clear to see from the giant smile on his face.

Sophie, aged 9, has found in the waterbed a safe space to stretch, relax and experience music in an entirely new way. Previously restricted in her positioning options, she now spends extended, settled sessions on the bed — laughing, smiling and telling staff the experience is “fantastic” and “cool” through her auditory scanning book.
Thank You, Kirkby Foundation and Cash for Kids
None of this would have been possible without our donors’ belief in our work and their commitment to improving the lives of children with complex needs. Their generosity has given 94 children a richer, more comfortable and more joyful experience of education and care.
