Visiting hospital can be a challenging experience for children. It’s an unfamiliar environment, they may already be feeling unwell or uncomfortable, and waiting to be seen can sometimes feel like a long time. Together, these factors can leave young patients feeling anxious, unsettled or simply bored.

That’s where our Wonderful Music on the Wards performer, Emma Black, comes in. Armed with her guitar, a songbook and plenty of smiles, Emma brings live music to children in wards and waiting areas, transforming the atmosphere through song. What begins as a difficult hospital visit can become a moment of joy, comfort and distraction.

Eleven-year-old Tyrell is no stranger to Stepping Hill Children’s Unit. Having been called back for further tests, he admitted he was feeling worried before his appointment. But when Emma began playing in the waiting area, the music quickly lifted his spirits.

“I felt nervous before coming in,” Tyrell said, “but now I feel calm and relaxed.”

Tyrell’s mum explained that the waits can sometimes be long, making the live music a welcome distraction that not only helps pass the time but also eases the anxiety that many children experience when visiting hospital.

Moments like these demonstrate the power of music to comfort, engage and reassure young patients, helping make a hospital visit a little brighter for children and their families.

“The switch adapted toys have been a wonderful addition to our school. Both staff and children were thrilled to have some new exciting resources. The children love the lights and movement many of these switch toys have and are highly motivated to explore and investigate how to make them work. They have been great for pupils to develop their understanding of cause and effect and we have also noticed improved concentration and engagement when using them. Often it can be difficult to find toys that are robust enough to withstand lots of heavy use AND be interesting and fun. These new resources tick all those boxes. They have made a noticeable impact on the children’s development in this area.”
