Pupils at St Peter’s CE Primary School in Farnworth, Bolton took part in the Hummingbird Project this month, our six week Positive Psychology course designed to boost mental health and wellbeing in schools. Delivered free of charge by MedEquip4Kids staff and volunteers, the programme has already reached more than 9,000 children across the North West.

Project Manager Ian Platt led a lively session with the Year 3 class, beginning with an activity where the children listed all the things that make them feel happy. Ian encouraged them to share their ideas with classmates who might have been finding the task tricky. It was a simple way to show how sharing what we know can make a real difference to someone else.

Football was a firm favourite, although the room was briefly divided over which team deserved the top spot! Other contributions included family time, dancing, pet hamsters, sweet treats, and even school, which made one boy’s list.

The pupils then moved on to a short mindfulness exercise, closing their eyes and imagining their own happy place. There were a few giggles at first but the class soon settled, and the room felt noticeably calmer afterwards.

Mindfulness exercises like this one can help children to build focus, manage big emotions and develop healthier responses to stress. Even a few minutes of quiet breathing or visualisation can support better self-regulation and promote a sense of calm that carries into the rest of the school day.

“The switch adapted toys have been a wonderful addition to our school. Both staff and children were thrilled to have some new exciting resources. The children love the lights and movement many of these switch toys have and are highly motivated to explore and investigate how to make them work. They have been great for pupils to develop their understanding of cause and effect and we have also noticed improved concentration and engagement when using them. Often it can be difficult to find toys that are robust enough to withstand lots of heavy use AND be interesting and fun. These new resources tick all those boxes. They have made a noticeable impact on the children’s development in this area.”
