Spoons Sensory Sessions are aimed at families with babies and children under two who required neonatal care when they were born due to being premature or sick. Preterm babies are at risk for motor/sensory development and are higher risk for learning difficulties, sensory issues and global developmental delay. As essential care equipment in neonatal units can limit skin to skin contact, bonding and attachment can be impacted leaving babies and children with separation. The benefits of sensory exploration for neonates include improved weight gain and muscle tone, better sleep quality and enhanced oral feeding.

The Spoons sensory sessions have a varied theme each month to increase stimulation and reflect the seasons and religious or cultural celebrations. MedEquip4KIDS have been asked to provide additional resources to enhance the sessions which are well attended in locations across Greater Manchester. This new equipment, including sensory toys and musical instruments, lights and bubble machines, books and craft items, will benefit 150 families for a number of years and improve outcomes for those who had a difficult start to their lives.
