This month we brought the Hummingbird Project, our free six-week Positive Psychology course, to St Edmund’s RC Primary School in Little Hulton, Salford. The sessions were delivered by Project Manager, Ian Platt. We asked two teachers from the year 3 and 4 classes we taught to give us their feedback.

In what ways do you think the Hummingbird Project has helped your pupils?

“I feel it has helped the children to identify their strengths. Working as a team has been a strength that has developed.”
“They have enjoyed having time and space to explore their emotions. They have benefited from the meditations and the suggestions for being calm.”

What do you think your pupils have learned from the project?

“The children are more aware of things that make them happy.”
“About their own strengths and hopes for the future and how they can work towards being happier.”

Do you feel the project has improved children’s mental health?

“Yes, it has made the children tune into their emotions.”
“Definitely.”

What tools or skills do you think your students have learned from the project to improve their resilience?

“The children have learnt that it’s okay to make mistakes, but bouncing back and building resilience when this happens.”
“How to work better as a team. Where to turn to if they need help.”

“The switch adapted toys have been a wonderful addition to our school. Both staff and children were thrilled to have some new exciting resources. The children love the lights and movement many of these switch toys have and are highly motivated to explore and investigate how to make them work. They have been great for pupils to develop their understanding of cause and effect and we have also noticed improved concentration and engagement when using them. Often it can be difficult to find toys that are robust enough to withstand lots of heavy use AND be interesting and fun. These new resources tick all those boxes. They have made a noticeable impact on the children’s development in this area.”
