As today is International Volunteer Day, we’d like to take the opportunity to recognise the incredible contributions of our volunteers and to thank them for their hard work over the years. We’re also thrilled to report that the charity has been put forward this year for the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

We rely on our volunteers to help with our fundraising for new medical equipment, and also with the delivery of our projects,  in particular our new volunteer-led Hummingbird Project to improve children’s mental health in schools. The Hummingbird Project currently has 16 volunteers from across Greater Manchester and Cheshire, and we will be recruiting more in future. In addition volunteers have played a key role in our PR and marketing, social media and administration.

Our longest serving volunteer is Elizabeth Stones (pictured), who has given fantastic support to the charity for the past 17 years. Elizabeth has taken part in a series of sponsored treks overseas, as well as delivering numerous talks to raise awareness of MedEquip4Kids within the community. She has personally raised an amazing £38,000 for children’s healthcare and we could not be more grateful for her dedication to our cause.

“Infections of the central nervous system need urgent and appropriate treatment. Most laboratory methods can take from 24 to 48 hours for diagnosis of bacterial meningitis and three to seven days for diagnosis of viral meningitis or encephalitis. The new equipment will mean we can get results of these tests in around an hour. We’ll be able to inform the clinicians of a positive result, allowing targeted therapy and reassurance to the patients and families. Just as important is the reporting of negative results, which may enable treatment withdrawal and possibly a shorter hospital stay.”
