We’re delighted to report back on another fantastic year for the Hummingbird Project, the six-week Positive Psychology course delivered by MedEquip4Kids free of charge to North West schools. The 2023-2024 Impact Report is available to download below.

During the school year 2023-2024 we visited 21 schools and taught 1,911 pupils from all age groups. In total we have now reached 6,426 pupils since the project began. The course covers topics related to improving our mental and emotional wellbeing, such as mindfulness, character strengths, gratitude, kindness, hope, and growth mindsets.

We ask students to complete questionnaires before and after the course to measure changes in their wellbeing or symptoms of anxiety and depression as a result of what they have learned. This year our results showed significant improvements across all three of the psychological scales we use. Feedback from teachers and pupils was once again overwhelmingly positive, with all of the primary school teachers surveyed stating that the course had helped to improve their pupils’ mental health.

We now have two members of staff delivering the course, allowing us to reach a greater number of pupils than previously. We are hoping to grow and expand the project further in the next few years.

“The switch adapted toys have been a wonderful addition to our school. Both staff and children were thrilled to have some new exciting resources. The children love the lights and movement many of these switch toys have and are highly motivated to explore and investigate how to make them work. They have been great for pupils to develop their understanding of cause and effect and we have also noticed improved concentration and engagement when using them. Often it can be difficult to find toys that are robust enough to withstand lots of heavy use AND be interesting and fun. These new resources tick all those boxes. They have made a noticeable impact on the children’s development in this area.”
