On Friday we visited Wardley CE Primary School in Salford, where our project co-ordinator Sonia Ebenezer-Bamigbayan was delivering the final sessions of the Hummingbird Project to years 5 and 6. Wardley Primary has a fantastic approach to pupils’ mental health and wellbeing and the school is accredited as an Emotionally Friendly School (EFS) at the Bronze level.

Sonia taught the first class about character strengths, using our illustrated cards which help pupils to identify their top five strengths and record them in their workbooks. The great thing about character strengths is that everyone already has them – we just need to find out what they are, and try to use them more in our daily lives. Doing this can really boost our self-esteem and happiness, as well as helping us to get through challenging times.

In the second session the class were asked to think about ways they could feel good about their future. Finally, they were asked to draw a poster about their experience of the Hummingbird Project, telling us what they liked and didn’t like so we can improve the course for next year.

After inspiring pupils at Wardley to focus on their strengths, Sonia went on to celebrate her own achievements at her graduation from the University of Bolton with a master’s degree in Positive Psychology and Counselling. Congratulations Sonia and we hope you had a fabulous day.

“The switch adapted toys have been a wonderful addition to our school. Both staff and children were thrilled to have some new exciting resources. The children love the lights and movement many of these switch toys have and are highly motivated to explore and investigate how to make them work. They have been great for pupils to develop their understanding of cause and effect and we have also noticed improved concentration and engagement when using them. Often it can be difficult to find toys that are robust enough to withstand lots of heavy use AND be interesting and fun. These new resources tick all those boxes. They have made a noticeable impact on the children’s development in this area.”
