It’s been a difficult year for Manchester, following the terror attack on Manchester Arena on 22 May 2017. In the aftermath of the attack, MedEquip4Kids launched a special appeal to make sure hospitals in Greater Manchester are fully equipped to provide emergency treatment, rehabilitation and long-term care to children and young people.

We’re so grateful to everyone who has donated so far. All funds raised will help provide medical equipment for the hospitals that treated children injured in the attack, including North Manchester General Hospital, Royal Bolton Hospital, Royal Oldham Hospital, Stepping Hill Hospital, and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT).

“We have been overwhelmed by the kindness and support from the public following the horrific Manchester Arena attack. We were simply doing our job, but are all very proud of the NHS response across Greater Manchester. The love and generosity that we have seen outweighs the evil and has united everyone even more.” Kate Dear, Consultant Advanced Nurse Practitioner at Stepping Hill.

New equipment is already benefiting accident and emergency units

Earlier this year we provided an AccuVein AV400 vein illumination device for the children’s accident and emergency department at Stepping Hill Hospital, which allows clinicians carrying out venepuncture to see children’s veins that are invisible to the naked eye.

We also funded an aquarium decorated folding screen to create privacy, distraction and a more pleasant environment for young patients at Wythenshawe Hospital’s paediatric emergency department.

We still need your help to care for children and young people in hospital

In the coming months, we’re hoping to fund:

  • Sensory voyagers for Royal Oldham Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital. These are mobile sensory units which can be brought to the bedside and use fibre-optic lights and sounds to calm and relax distressed children.
  • Phototherapy lightboxes and vital signs monitors for the children’s unit at Wythenshawe Hospital.
  • Wall-mounted ophthalmoscopes, pulse oximeters, and furniture to upgrade the waiting room at the children’s accident and emergency department at Stepping Hill Hospital.

Donations to the Manchester Appeal can be made online or by sending a cheque to MedEquip4Kids at: The Appeals Office, 90 Deansgate, Manchester M3 2GP. Alternatively, text MANC11 £5 (or your chosen amount) to 70070.  Thank you.

“The materials provided greatly help with the therapeutic process and engaging children, young people and their families in therapeutic work. The young people greatly appreciate having this equipment to use within their sessions. Many of the young people we see have a history of trauma including neglect and being able to access materials that they can use and enjoy is of great benefit and hopefully assists us to reinforce the messages of their worth as their self-concept is often very low.”
