Accuvein device

Blood tests and cannulation are common procedures for babies and children in hospital, but children’s veins are not always easy to locate.  The AccuVein AV400 device illuminates veins below the skin, making them easier to find and reducing stress and pain for the patient. We provided an AccuVein AV400 for the outpatient’s unit at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where it has been put to excellent use.

Nurse Manager Donna Pooley says: “The team are really appreciative of this equipment as it now ensures staff can always wear gloves when trying to feel for veins that have previously been difficult to palpate, which given the current pandemic is even more essential.”

Rachel says: “The AccuVein is helpful, especially when the vein is deep or you can’t feel it with your finger.”

Jo says: “The AccuVein is useful when you have a baby and the veins in their arms are not so easy to see.”

Thank you to everyone who supported this project. MedEquipKids will continue to fund these scanners for hospitals that need them over the coming year.

“Infections of the central nervous system need urgent and appropriate treatment. Most laboratory methods can take from 24 to 48 hours for diagnosis of bacterial meningitis and three to seven days for diagnosis of viral meningitis or encephalitis. The new equipment will mean we can get results of these tests in around an hour. We’ll be able to inform the clinicians of a positive result, allowing targeted therapy and reassurance to the patients and families. Just as important is the reporting of negative results, which may enable treatment withdrawal and possibly a shorter hospital stay.”
