Stepping Hill Hospital - Paediatric A&E Dept (10-051)

Equipment for Paediatric Emergency Department.

Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport is a major centre for emergency treatment with a very busy casualty department. At present, there is no separate facility for children meaning young patients who need emergency care are forced to use the same waiting area and treatment rooms as adults.

At busy times, such as weekend and evenings, emergency departments are frightening, unpredictable places. Increasingly, major hospitals are introducing a policy of running a separate children’s facility for emergency care, just as they do for wards and other departments. This means that children do not have to share a waiting area with adults who may be violent or aggressive.

The NHS trust has secured a budget and planning consent for an extension to their existing A&E facilities. This will mean converting two existing rooms and building onto the side to make a separate waiting area and two dedicated treatment rooms for children. The new facility will share some staff and equipment with the adult area and, in life-threatening emergencies, the children will have access to the trauma room in the adult facility, but will be kept as separate as possible.

We have pledged to fundraise to make the new facility child-friendly, with distraction items, comfortable seating, toys, multisensory equipment for children with special needs and some paediatric specific medical equipment.
