St Helen's Paediatric Continence Service - Continence Equipment (10-045)

Continence Equipment

The Continence Service covers the area of St Helens and Halton in Merseyside. The team of community nurses cares for over 1,000 children each year. All of them suffer from bladder or bowel problems, usually as a result of physical or learning disabilities including Down’s Syndrome or autism. The team treat children up to the age of 19.

Problems with continence have a massive impact on a child’s self confidence. Children with other underlying conditions often struggle to recognise the signals to visit the toilet. This has a huge impact on family life, and makes caring for a child with disabilities much more difficult.

We have agreed to provide musical potties and malem alarms to alert children that it’s time to visit the toilet. We also want to provide education materials and a DVD.  This equipment is known to make a big difference to the success of toilet training, and really helps children to feel confident.

Beneficiaries: Approximately 300 children.
