The Corbar Birth Centre is run by Stockport NHS Foundation Trust but is based in Buxton, Derbyshire.

The birth centre is a facility that allows local mums to deliver their babies without travelling to one of the big maternity hospitals in Greater Manchester. It accepts women with low risk pregnancies and is a midwife-led unit.

Women get more personal care and see the same midwife throughout their pregnancy, delivery and follow-up care. This personal care is shown to increase the take up of breastfeeding and reduce intervention during birth.

We have been asked to provide an electric breast pump, which is more effective at expressing milk than the handheld pumps.

If a mother has problems breastfeeding, it is useful to be able to express to help the milk supply to become established. At present there is no breastpump at Buxton, so this will allow more mothers to overcome initial breastfeeding problems.
