Following changes in the services in south Manchester, the Children’s Ward at Wythenshawe Hospital now operates and Paediatric Accident and Emergency facility within the main Casualty department. As a result existing equipment has been split between the two sites meaning staff often have to rely on adult equipment to meet the needs.
The Hand Held Pulse Oximeter is a vital part of Accident and Emergency care, being used to treat children and babies with conditions such as Asthma, Croupe, obstructions in the airway and decreased consciousness. It is used 10-15 times a day and as a result it is felt that two more would be of huge benefit to the department.
This device offers a fast and easy method of reading oxygen and pulse levels. It allows medical staff to quickly assess the child’s breathing when under pressure, thereby speeding up treatment in an emergency. It is ideal for use during transit, and is consistent with equipment used by ambulance staff and ward staff.
Two more of these monitors would ensure that there is always equipment available even at busy times. At present staff have the use of one unit borrowed from the ward, and are forced to use another borrowed from the adult Accident and Emergency unit at busy times. To have two for permanent use would be of huge benefit to the rapid treatment of children and babies.
Each unit costs £437.50. The department requires two units, with a total project cost of £875. All ongoing staffing and maintenance costs will be met by the Health Authority.
