We have been approached by the Children’s Unit at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan for help in providing updated equipment to replace what is in use on the Children’s High Dependency Unit. The unit treats approximately 250 patients each week, from the ages of 0 to 15.
We have been asked to provide a Passport Monitor, which enables medical staff to accurately assess the condition of a patient. It takes readings of heart rate, oxygen saturation, blood pressure and blood gases. At present three or more separate pieces of equipment are required to show all this. To a young child seeing so many different devices can in itself be daunting. Having one compact monitor is less intrusive, as well as having huge benefits in cutting down staff training time.
Often improvements in medical technology happen more quickly than NHS budgets can keep pace with. Although the ward currently has equipment to perform all these functions, it is outdated and cumbersome. This new equipment is more accurate and effective, and dramatically cuts down on staff time, thereby speeding up the response to a changing situation.
This particular piece of equipment is also compatible with that used in the regional specialist centres, so in the event of a child requiring transfer to one of the specialist hospitals outside the area this monitor can be transported with them.
The monitor costs £11,150. All ongoing staffing, maintenance and training will be provided by Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan.
