We have been approached by the Children’s Unit at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan for help in providing updated equipment to replace what is in use on the Children’s High Dependency Unit. The unit treats approximately 250 patients each week, from the ages of 0 to 15.
The Pulse Oximeter enables medical staff to accurately assess the pulse rate and oxygen saturation of a patient. Compared to the equipment currently in use, this model can provide a much more reliable reading when a patient is unsettled and irritable, so is therefore ideal for use on children.
When a young child is scared, and will not stay still, it can be difficult to get accurate readings. This can result in false alarms which are stressful to parents and children. Providing this equipment will cut down on that risk. This particular piece of equipment is also portable and compatible with that used in the regional specialist centres, so in the event of a child requiring transfer to one of the specialist hospitals outside the area this monitor can be transported with them.
