Trafford General Hospital - Apnoea Monitors x6
UPDATE: This project was completed in 2007

The Children’s Unit at Trafford General Hospital treats children from 0 to 16. Patients come from a wide, diverse area from near the city centre out to Sale and Wythenshawe. They treat children with a wide variety of conditions, including any illnesses or following any surgical procedures.
The Unit manages the Care of the Next Infant programme, which helps parents from across Greater Manchester who are having another baby after losing a baby to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (cot death). Taking a new baby home is an emotional time for any parent, but for families who have lost a baby it can bring back the grief of the previous loss, leading to an increase in depression and sleeplessness. These monitors provide peace of mind, but more importantly are also life-saving, by detecting very early any changes to the breathing pattern, and this is particularly important if genetic conditions cause the second child to be at risk of the same problems as the first.
The scheme also helps babies who have had a life-threatening incident, for example if the baby has stopped breathing and been resuscitated by parents or paramedics. These babies are at significantly higher risk of a future incident, and these monitors provide early warning and reassurance for parents.
Each family will keep the monitor for an average of 3-4 months. This means that in total this project will help an average of 21 families each year to leave hospital earlier and regain some normality at a very difficult time.
We have agreed to provide six of the monitors. Each monitor will cost £595, and the total cost will be £3,570.
