Trafford General Hospital - Phototherapy Units x3

UPDATE: This project was completed in 2007.

The Neo-Natal Department at Trafford General Hospital pre-term and seriously ill babies. The majority of premature babies, and many who are full term and otherwise healthy, can suffer from jaundice shortly after birth. This is caused by the liver not fully functioning, and therefore not clearing away bilirubin in the blood.

By providing the latest in Neo-natal medical technology, we can significantly reduce the need for babies to be moved to other hospital sites. Often improvements in patient care happen more quickly than NHS budgets can keep pace with. Although the ward currently has equipment to perform this function, it is outdated and not as accurate. This new equipment is more effective, matching the standard of care at the regional centres of excellence.

The Phototherapy Unit is a specially designed light device that is placed over the cot or incubator for a few days. It treats jaundice by shining fluorescent light on the baby day and night, to break down the bilirubin which causes the yellow appearance on the skin. It is a non-invasive treatment, and is usually effective after 2-3 days.

The provision of these devices would help to bring the standard of care up to that offered at the specialist Neo-Natal units. As well as allowing much greater accuracy, they would cut down on hospital transfers, and therefore massively reduce the pressure on the family at a very difficult time.

The Phototherapy Units will cost £1,436 each. Three are required with a total project cost of £5,744.
