We have been approached by the Community Nursing Team at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport for help in providing five Low Flow Meters. When babies are premature, they must spend the early weeks or months in the Neo Natal Unit. However, once they are stabilised they are able to go home with their families with the assistance of a low flow meter to provide home oxygen therapy under the supervision of community nurses. At present the team in Stockport have just five meters and on average 8-10 babies each year require a meter for six months or longer.
These meters would allow all babies who are well enough to be sent home to their families. Having a sick baby in hospital can delay the bonding process and be hugely upsetting to older siblings. The sooner a baby can get home the sooner a mother can begin to breastfeed naturally and begin family life.
We have agreed to provide five of the meters, at a cost of £100.00 each. This will give a total project cost of £500.
