Saint Mary's Hospital - Phlebotomy Room

UPDATE: The room opened in 2008.

Going to hospital for treatment is not an experience many of us would choose, but for a child it can be especially bewildering, frightening and painful. On behalf of the 5,200 children each year who need blood tests at St Mary’s Hospital Children’s Outpatients’ Department, I’m seeking your help to ensure that we provide the high standard of medical care every child deserves.

We are working closely with the Play Therapists at St Mary’s to refurbish and improve the main Blood Room in the Children’s OPD. All children who need blood tests, as well as other diagnosis and procedures use the room. It is in constant use, and is currently sparsely decorated and is not very child-friendly.

The new room is less clinical, and will help the child to keep calm during unpleasant procedures. We have agreed to redecorate the room, provide child-friendly toys and distraction equipment, and provide a reclining chair. We will be providing multi-sensory equipment to help distract smaller children and babies, and also reward stickers for children following blood tests.

Reducing tension and stress prior to a blood test is known to reduce pain response, and improve a child’s co-operation with future tests, thus speeding up diagnosis.

The total cost of the refurbishment is £4,792.43.
