UPDATE: This equipment was delivered in 2009.
The Radiology department at Salford Royal Hospital has seen a dramatic increase in the number of children it sees following the opening of a new Children’s Accident and Emergency facility at the hospital. The unit is shortly to offer 24 hour paediatric services, and at present children must share a waiting area with adults.
As numbers of young patients increase following the closure of the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, it is important to provide a dedicated waiting area and sufficient distraction items to ensure children are calm and prepared for their X-ray, and can be distracted during examinations. This will make the whole procedure more bearable for the child, and reduce tension throughout the unit.
The lead Radiographer at the hospital has put together a list of play and distraction items designed to suit a full range of children from babies to older teens, with some items for use in the waiting area and some for use in the radiology rooms to help keep babies still and calm. The list includes books, toys, games, interactive wooden toys, child-sized seating, decoration kits and audio-visual equipment including DVDs.
The total cost of the project will be £2182.76 and this will fully equip and decorate the new paediatric waiting area as well as provide distraction in each of the radiology rooms used by children.
