Royal Preston Hospital - Pulse Oximeters x4

UPDATE: This equipment was delivered in 2007.

The Neo Natal Unit at the Royal Preston Hospital is a busy regional centre, accepting premature and very sick babies from hospitals across the North West.  The unit has 20 cots, and can accept babies from as early as 23 weeks, and weighing as little as 450g.

Accurate monitoring of babies is crucial in detecting any slight changes to the condition of the newborn.  Staff on the ward have identified a need for an upgrade of equipment designed to monitor oxygen levels in the blood.  Although the ward currently has equipment to perform this function, it is outdated and cumbersome.  This new equipment is more accurate and effective, reducing the risk of infection and matching the standard of care at the regional centres of excellence.

It is very difficult to keep babies still when trying to monitor their condition.  This can make it impossible to get accurate readings, resulting in false alarms that are stressful to parents.  The new technology eliminates this problem as it works despite movement of the patient.  It is also significantly more accurate on tiny babies, who may weigh as little as 2lb.

This particular piece of equipment is compatible with that used in the regional specialist centres, so in the event of a child requiring transfer to one of the specialist hospitals outside the area this monitor can be transported with them.

The Pulse Oximeters cost £2,516 each, and four are required.  Therefore in total we are seeking £10,065.
