Rochdale Infirmary - Play and Distraction Equipment

UPDATE: This equipment was delivered in 2007.

We are working closely with the Play Unit at Rochdale Infirmary Children’s Unit to improve the experience and self esteem of children in hospital. The Play Specialists have asked us to provide play and distraction therapy items for children aged from birth to 17 years.

The distraction items are for use in treatment rooms, and are designed to engage the child’s interest while procedures are carried out. The list of items required includes bubble tubes and light projectors to calm babies and toddlers, and interactive toys for older children as well as games and activities for teenagers. The focus is on removing the feeling of being in a clinical environment, and helping the child to keep calm.

The play therapy items are for children to use at their bed or in the play room. The items include doctor, nurse, paramedic and fire fighter dressing up costumes, ambulance play sets and multicultural dolls. Play can help a child to cope with a traumatic experience and to express how they are feeling about their illness.

The Children’s Unit at Rochdale treats an estimated 3,700 in-patients each year, with a further 5,000 being seen as out-patients. Play staff estimate a further 2,500 siblings attend clinics and visit the ward. In total approximately 11,200 each year will benefit from this project, by having access to toys and enjoying the improved atmosphere that will result from the enhancements.

The items required at Rochdale cost £2,228.66 in total.
