Ormskirk and District General Hospital - Artwork for Children's Unit

UPDATE: This project was completed in 2007.

Ormskirk District General Hospital opened its new Children’s Unit in October 2004. The new facility treats children as in-patients, out-patients and day case patients. It caters for children from birth to age 16 and is a modern facility for all children in North Merseyside and West Lancashire.

We have pledged to help improve the environment on the approach to the Children’s Unit by providing six large detailed wall murals. These will be placed along the approach to the Children’s Unit where all patients and visitors will pass, and will direct children down along the paediatric corridor.

Although the new Children’s Unit is bright and friendly, currently the approaching corridors and stairwells are bare and unwelcoming. The aim of this new artwork is to stimulate children’s minds andallay fears of being in hospital, and to create a child-friendly environment.

The theme of The Wizard of Oz has been chosen, and six scenes have been designed full of detail to engage children’s interest. The theme will then continue into the Children’s Unit.

The new artwork will be enjoyed by all patients as well as other visitors to the hospital, particularly children visiting parents orgrandparents.

For six large detailed walls, comprising 17 x 6’ wall sections, the total cost will be £10,000. £2,000 is already secured from an endowment so we are seeking £8,000 in total.
