North Manchester General Hospital - Multisensory Room

UPDATE: The multisensory room opened in 2010.

For any child, hospital can be an intimidating frightening place. The distress of being sick or injured and in an unusual place can bring on panic and immense anguish which can delay the recovery time and put additional stress on the child as well as the hospitals resources.

For children with special needs the whole hospital experience is extremely distressing. They do not have the perception or awareness of why it is such an important place to go when you’re sick or injured. This is also true for children who are having repeated hospital treatment as they will have an awareness of what is going to happen.

NMGH are currently having a women’s and children’s unit built and have requested a multisensory unit to be included within the build.

To have this would aid the recovery process of children receiving treatment there by creating a whole new hospital experience for them to enjoy rather than fear.

Research into the benefits of multisensory rooms show that they help in;
  • Improving moods
  • Reducing disruptive behaviours,
  • Reducing anxiety and fear,
  • Improving communications
  • Enhancing interpersonal interactions.
  • Reducing aggression and self-injury
This would benefit thousands of children across the Greater Manchester region over a one year period.
