Salford Royal Hospital’s Neo Natal Unit is a regional centre, taking babies from within Salford and across Greater Manchester and the North West. Babies are taken from 24 weeks’ gestation and weighing as little as 2lbs. Salford is one of only two neo natal units in the North West that has staff trained in safe cooling of babies at risk of brain damage.

Cooling neo natal babies is a new technique, pioneered in the UK, which results in a much lower risk of brain damage in full-term babies whose brain has been deprived of oxygen. The baby’s body temperature is reduced by 4C for 2-3 days, inducing mild hyperthermia. The outcome for the baby is dramatically improved and the hospital is keen to offer this to more babies. The cooling mattress is a purpose-designed item, and it will be used at Salford, and later transferred to Bolton when the service and staff move.
