Mancot Complex Needs Nursing Team - Suction Pumps

UPDATE: This project was completed in 2010.

The North Wales Primary Care Trust operate a Complex Needs Nursing Team, based in Mancot, Flintshire, supporting children with a range of health needs to continue their day-to-day lives supported by their medical team and families.

Children who need a tracheostomy (an airway inserted into the windpipe) need constant access to a suction pump to remove build-up of saliva. At present the PCT offers a large, mains powered machine to its patients, but newer, smaller models are now on the market which offer much more freedom and flexibility to children who need these machines.

We have pledged to provide four suction machines for use by children in Flintshire. The new machine is more discreet, quieter and more compact than the machines the NHS currently offer. Being battery operated and portable makes them far more suitable for children, who may be attending main stream schools or play groups in the community. They hold battery power for longer, and can be charged in the car. They are also more discreet which is important for older children trying to maintain a normal school life.

All the machines will be used by children in Flintshire, and will make a tremendous difference to the freedom and opportunities of children with severe health conditions. Each pump will cost £350.00. We want to provide four, with a total cost of £1,400.00.
