Royal Bolton Hospital - Phototherapy Units

UPDATE: This equipment was delivered in 2009.

Of the 4,000 babies born in the Bolton area each year, up to half will develop jaundice in the first weeks of life. We are seeking funds to provide a compact phototherapy device, to ensure the most seriously ill babies receive treatment quickly and remain with their mothers on the post-natal ward. These devices are small and easily moved, so they can be taken to the babies, to avoid transfer to the neo-natal unit.

Jaundice is a common problem caused by the liver not fully functioning, and therefore not clearing away bilirubin in the blood.

Jaundice affects at least 50% of full-term babies and 70% of preterm babies. Not all of these babies will need phototherapy treatment, but where bilirubin levels rise babies will need to be exposed to phototherapy. In the past this would have meant transfer to the Special Care Baby Unit. By providing improved equipment to the post-natal ward babies can stay with their mothers and still receive the treatment they need.

Jaundice is caused by a build-up of bilirubin in the blood, causing a yellow appearance. In its more serious form it can ultimately lead to liver damage, and the worst cases can cause liver failure and the need for a transplant. The condition is common in the first weeks of life, and is more common in breastfed babies, so rates are increasing with the increasing take-up of breastfeeding.

The phototherapy units cost £2,000 each and we have agreed to provide two. With delivery the total cost will be £4,015.
