Rochdale Infirmary - Baby Warming Cot and Blanket
UPDATE: This equipment was delivered in 2008.
The arrival of a new baby should be a time for celebration, but for the one in ten babies who need special care, the first few days or weeks of life are instead a time fraught with worry and fear for their families. It is common for the mothers of sick babies to struggle with bonding and suffer from more severe post-natal depression. The separation from their babies in the first few hours can have a lasting impact on the relationship and on breastfeeding. Anything that allows the baby to stay with the mother can help this process.
We have agreed to provide a Baby Warming Cot – this is a less invasive piece of equipment than an incubator and can be used on the maternity unit, or in the postnatal area. It allows Mums and Dads access to the baby, and to retain contact, but it serves to regulate body temperature and ensure that the baby does not get too cold.
This new cot will be used for the less severely ill babies, who do not need to be taken to the Neo Natal Unit, but need a little more help than most. The other major benefit of the new cots is that they can be quickly raised to an appropriate, accessible height in the event of an emergency, so medical staff can treat the baby quickly without moving the baby to a treatment table.
We will also be providing a Biliblanket. This piece of equipment is used to treat jaundice in the newborn. It allows treatment to be given while the mother is cuddling or feeding the newborn, and avoids babies needing to be placed in incubators. Again it helps to keep the baby with its Mum, helping bonding and reducing stress.
The cot will cost £2,043 and the Biliblanket will cost £2,324. As a charity we do not pay VAT on medical items.
