Tameside General Hospital - Play and Distraction Items
We are working closely with the Play Specialists team at Tameside General Hospital Children’s Unit to improve the experience and self esteem of children in hospital. The Play Specialists have asked us to provide play and distraction therapy items for children aged from birth to 17 years.
The distraction items are for use on the ward, in treatment rooms and in waiting areas, and are designed to engage the child’s interest while procedures are carried out. The list of items required includes board games and computer games to prevent children from becoming bored, CD players and toys to calm babies and toddlers, and electronic games equipment for older children as well as games and activities for teenagers. We will also be providing floor mats and beanbags to allow babies and toddlers to play freely rather than being restricted to their cots. The focus is on removing the feeling of being in a clinical environment, and helping the child to keep calm.
The play specialists play a vital role within the children’s unit by engaging children in activities to take their mind off illness or injury, and this is particularly important when a child is scared or in hospital for prolonged periods. Play can help a child to cope with a traumatic experience and to express how they are feeling about their illness.
The items required at Tameside cost £1,813.56 in total.
