Macclesfield District General Hospital - Pulse Oximeters

The paediatric unit at Macclesfield District General Hospital treats an average of £3,100 children each year. Many of these will require oxygen saturation monitoring at some point during their stay. The ward currently has five Nellcor saturation monitors, which are becoming out-of-date and are not as accurate or effective as the newer models.

Oxygen saturation monitors enable medical staff to accurately assess the pulse rate and oxygen saturation of a patient. Compared to the equipment currently in use, this model can provide a much more reliable reading when a patient is in distress, so is therefore ideal for use on babies.

It is very difficult to keep a small child still when trying to monitor its condition. This can make it impossible to get accurate readings, resulting in false alarms that are stressful to parents. The new technology eliminates this problem as it works despite movement of the patient. It is also significantly more accurate on tiny babies.

This particular piece of equipment is portable and compatible with that used in the regional specialist centres, so in the event of a child requiring transfer to one of the specialist hospitals outside the area that this monitor can be transported with them.

The pulse oximeters cost £2,000 each and five are required therefore we need a total of £10,000.
