West Cumberland Hospital - Paediatric Harness & Vacuum Mattress/Humidifier
West Cumberland Hospital is a district hospital covering a large rural area of West Cumbria including the towns of Whitehaven, Maryport and Keswick. They have an adult Intensive Care Unit, which operates a Paediatric Intensive Care bed used for stabilising children needing intensive care, before they are transferred to one of the larger hospitals in Newcastle. At times children can be on the unit for two days before they are transferred.
The Paediatric harness and vacuum mattress is used when transporting critically ill children to a specialist Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. It moulds to the child’s body to keep them immobile during the journey and improves comfort and safety.
The Humidifier is used to administer oxygen safely to small children. At present the ward only has humidifiers designed for adult use. This model is newer and more effective than the equipment currently in use, and fits with other paediatric equipment.
Both items will improve the level of care offered to critically ill children in Cumbria.
