Blackpool Victoria Hospital - Breast Pump
UPDATE: This equipment was delivered in December 2007
Staff at Blackpool Victoria Hospital are very keen to improve rates of breastfeeding in new mothers. Breastfeeding is known to improve long-term health and immunity of the newborn, as well as helping the bonding process and improving the health of the mother. It is particularly important in pre-term and sick babies, whose chances of survival are improved by breastfeeding.
For a number of reasons it is sometimes necessary for a mother to express milk. Health conditions of the mother or baby can interfere with natural breastfeeding. Examples include chest and heart conditions, which mean the baby is too breathless to feed independently, and severe infections which cause lethargy. Some situations, such as the need for surgery, mean that the baby can’t feed at the normal times. In all these situations a mother will need to express milk to ensure the supply does not dry up.
The expressed milk can then be saved until the baby is well enough, or used to tube feed the baby. Electric breast pumps are far more effective and easy to use than the hand-operated devices, helping mothers to ensure enough milk is expressed at a very stressful time. The model chosen complies with all infection control requirements, and is very robust and easy to use.
The pump will cost £550.00.
