Every team who participated in Mega Hike 2010 was a winner - but MedEquip4Kids has awarded four of the top teams in recognition for their incredible achievements.
The fastest all-male, fastest all-female, fastest mixed and best support teams have been presented with MedEquip4Kids awards presented by the charity's deputy director, Ghazala Baig.
The fastest all-male team, and the team in first place, was Groundwork Pennine Lancashire, a.k.a Mark Grimshaw, Luc Sidebotham, Drew Hart and team captain Peter Jordan. They crossed the finish line in just under 17 hours at 9.30pm - knocking two hours off the event's previous record for fastest team.
The Pocket Tappers - a.k.a Karl Jackson, Jennifer Cheers, Helen Johnson and team captain Wally Ramsbottom - were not far behind finishing in second place at 10.15pm and being the fastest mixed team.
The fastest all-female team was Legs Go, a.k.a Karen Bland, Beverley Swift, Jane Harris and team captain Loraine Simpson. The ladies crossed the finish line at 2am.
The final team awarded was Chorley Council who were chosen for having the best support team. Walkers Jennie Cockerell, Graham Pryle, Kris McMenamin and team captain Dionne Winstanley were unable to complete the challenge being forced to retire at checkpoint four.
However, their support team, Helen Wadge, Andy Brown and Stuart Roberts, kept the ladies motivated with drinks, food, a change of socks and foot massages ready at each checkpoint and even took turns to walk stages of the hike to keep them going as far as possible.
MedEquip4Kids' Ghazala said: "More than 80 per cent of the Mega Hike teams completed the challenge, which is something to be recognised in itself, but we wanted to give a special thanks to these four teams for their efforts and making Mega Hike such a fantastic event." |
